چکیده

We have revisited the search for carbon monoxide absorption features in transmission during the transit of the extrasolar planet HD209458b. In AugustSeptember 2002 we acquired a total of 1077 high resolution spectra (λ/δλ ∼ 25, 000) in the K-band (2 μm) wavelength region using NIRSPEC on the Keck II telescope during three transits. These data are more numerous and of better quality than the data analyzed in an initial search by Brown et al. Our analysis achieves a sensitivity sufficient to test the degree of CO absorption in the first overtone bands during transit, based on plausible models of the planetary atmosphere. We analyze our observations by comparison to theoretical tangent Data presented herein were obtained at the W.M. Keck Observatory, which is operated as a scientific partnership among the California Institute of Technology, the University of California and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Sodium Absorption from the Exoplanetary Atmosphere of Hd 189733b Detected in the Optical Transmission Spectrum

We present the first ground-based detection of sodium absorption in the transmission spectrum of an extrasolar planet. Absorption due to the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD 189733b is detected in both lines of the Na i doublet. High spectral resolution observations were taken of 11 transits with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) on the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). The Na i ab...

Infrared Transmission Spectra for Extrasolar Giant Planets

Among the hot Jupiters known to date that transit their parent stars, the two best candidates to be observed with transmission spectroscopy in the mid-infrared (MIR) are HD 189733b and HD 209458b, due to their combined characteristics of planetary density, orbital parameters, and parent star distance and brightness. Here we simulate transmission spectra of these two planets during their primary...

Near infrared spectroscopic search for the close orbiting planet HD 75289 b

We present a search for the near infrared spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet HD 75289b. We obtained ∼230 spectra in the wavelength range 2.18 μm 2.19 μm using the Phoenix spectrograph at Gemini South. By considering the direct spectrum, derived from irradiated model atmospheres, we search for the absorption profile signature present in the combined star and pl...

SEARCH FOR CARBON MONOXIDE IN THE ATMOSPHERE OF THE TRANSITING EXOPLANET HD 189733b

Water, methane and carbon-monoxide are expected to be among the most abundant molecules besides molecular hydrogen in the hot atmosphere of close-in extrasolar giant planets. Atmospheric models for these planets predict that the strongest spectrophotometric features of those molecules are located at wavelengths ranging from 1 to 10 μm making this region of particular interest. Consequently, tra...

Giant Planet with a stratosphere ?

We have carried out a search for the 2.14 μm spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet, HD 179949b. High cadence time series spectra were obtained with the CRIRES spectrograph at VLT1 on two closely separated nights. Deconvolution yielded spectroscopic profiles with mean S/N ratios of several thousand, enabling the near infrared contrast ratios predicted for the HD 1...
